About Me

Mischa Richards MA. (Oxon)

I am a psychotherapist, researcher and teacher.

I am passionate about helping people to grow in self-understanding, resilience and a sense of life-purpose.

Evidence-based psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of symptoms and types of distress. It offers a way of overcoming the barriers that limit our freedoms through personal development and enriched relationships.

Professional Biography

Training & Expertise

I trained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation (WPF), one of the leading training organisations in the UK with a reputation for clinical excellence.

I am a professional member of the Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling (FPC) and registered with both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).

I specialise in working with individual adults with a range of emotional, cognitive, interpersonal and behavioural difficulties. I work across the spectrum of psychological disorders from moderate and common forms of mental distress, including mood related issues, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem to the more complex, life-long and personality related difficulties.

My specialist interests are in the areas of:

  • abuse
  • anxiety
  • change & transition in life
  • depression
  • divorce & separation
  • grief & bereavement
  • relationships
  • self-esteem
  • sexuality
  • trauma

Clinical Experience

I have worked in a variety of settings including NHS, charity and community organisations and private practice.

These settings have taught me to hold a person-centred approach, mindful of how a client's experience of therapy supports their ongoing motivation, openness to change and achievement of positive outcomes.

Within a broadly psychoanalytic approach, I draw upon new evidence-based research and practice to support individual progress.

Professional Background

I have previously worked in the education, social care and charity sectors in which I provided therapeutic support to children, young persons and adults for over fifteen years.

Working in contexts of diversity and deprivation enabled me to develop insight and skill in managing the often complex interplay between our personal experience and our social and cultural environment.

I am therefore empathic to the unique ways we suffer as individuals and, from experience, understand how these struggles can be held within a therapeutic process serving new growth and well-being.

Psychotherapy & Counselling

Mental Illness & Health

Despite the many things that divide and distinguish us as people, our common humanity is evident in our vulnerabilities, needs and passions.

Whilst medical science speaks a language of labels and categories, suffering is a deeply personal experience; occasionally exaggerating our sense being different and alone.

Yet our ways of suffering are a type of language that reflects our personal uniqueness and seeks to be addressed, heard and responded to by another.

Psychotherapy and counselling are opportunities for discovering what our symptoms and suffering are trying to tell us. Alongside a deepened self-understanding, we also acquire a new capacity and freedom for life.

Beginning Therapy

Beginning therapy can be a daunting process.

I am sensitive to the concerns and anxieties around making this step and offer a warm welcome, professional guidance and a contained space.

Together, we will consider if we feel like a 'good fit' whilst exploring your immediate goals and how this could be achieved.

Initial Consultations usually require one appointment, but occasionally a second is required if felt to be appropriate.

Initial Consultations are charged at a standard fee of £80.

Supporting Cure & Care

I usually meet clients once weekly or at a higher frequency depending on need and circumstance.

Many clients prefer in-person appointments but also benefit from the option of working either online or by telephone when appropriate.

The fee for ongoing work is between £80-100 and will be agreed upon in the Initial Consultation.

Concessionary rates are available depending on personal circumstances.
